How Long Does a Deceased Estate Clearance Take?

How Long Does a Deceased Estate Clearance Take?

An ordinary three-bedroom house can usually be cleared in one day. If cleaning and gardening are also required, allow another day. A heavily hoarded house can take around one week.

These are practical guide timeframes based on our experience at Total Estate Clearance. The amount of contents, access to the property and the work required all affect the final schedule.

What affects how long a clearance takes?

The number of bedrooms is only part of the picture. A three-bedroom house with straightforward access and a modest amount of furniture is a different job from a similar-sized home with packed cupboards, full sheds and years of belongings stored underneath it.

The main factors include:

  • The volume of contents: Furniture, household belongings and accumulated clutter all take time to sort, carry and remove.
  • Access: Stairs, narrow doorways, long carrying distances and limited truck parking can slow the work.
  • Additional areas: Garages, sheds, gardens and under-house storage can add considerably to the clearance.
  • Sorting requirements: Identifying belongings for family, donation or sale takes time and needs clear instructions.
  • Specialist work: If hazardous materials are identified, they may require separate arrangements that affect the schedule.

An ordinary three-bedroom house: usually one day

For an ordinary three-bedroom house, our team can usually complete the clearance in one working day.

That is the removal stage. It does not automatically mean the property has also been thoroughly cleaned or the garden brought back into shape.

If you are preparing the home for sale, it helps to agree on the full scope beforehand so everyone understands what will be completed and when.

Cleaning and gardening: allow another day

Where cleaning and gardening are required after an ordinary clearance, allow another day.

This gives a useful starting point for planning: one day to clear the house, followed by another day for cleaning and gardening. Larger gardens, substantial overgrowth or more demanding cleaning work may change that estimate.

Tell us about any photography, inspection or handover dates when requesting a quote so we can discuss a suitable schedule.

A heavily hoarded house: around one week

A high volume of belongings adds to the time needed for sorting and removal.

A heavily hoarded house can take around a week to clear. The extra time reflects the volume of belongings and the care needed to work through the property.

Access through rooms may be restricted, and important or sentimental items can be mixed in with other contents. These jobs need a realistic timeframe that allows the team to work methodically.

Around one week is a guide rather than a fixed promise for every property. We will need to assess the extent of the clearance and any additional cleaning or garden work before confirming the schedule.

What can families do before the clearance?

You do not need to clear the house yourself before asking for help. A few decisions beforehand can, however, make the process smoother:

  • Remove or clearly identify items you want to keep, where practical.
  • Let us know about documents, photographs or sentimental belongings you would like us to look out for.
  • Agree with family members on which items are staying and which can be removed.
  • Arrange access to the house, garage and sheds.
  • Tell us about parking restrictions, stairs or other access difficulties.

If sorting through belongings feels overwhelming, discuss this with us beforehand so we can agree on how to approach it.

Does the timeframe affect the cost?

The amount of work and the time needed are connected, but the number of days alone does not determine the price. The volume to be removed, disposal requirements, access and additional services also matter.

Our guide to estate clearance costs explains these factors in more detail.
